MLB’s Cardinals release renderings of new Ballpark Village

The St. Louis Cardinals Major League Baseball team has unveiled renderings of what phase two of its new Ballpark Village will look like.

The second phase of the project will cost $220m (€204.2m/£172.5m) and cover an area of 550,000sq ft, including the construction of a 29-story luxury high-rise residential tower, the first new class-A office building in downtown St. Louis in almost 30 years.

Part two of the project also includes further retail, restaurant and entertainment space in the area. The team is currently awaiting approval to begin work that will follow up on phase one, which was completed in 2014.

Phase two is expected to create 1,500 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent jobs when open.

“Our vision of a mixed-use neighbourhood where people live, work and play will become a reality; this is a real game-changer for the city of St. Louis and the state of Missouri,” Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said.

Jack Coatar, 7th Ward Alderman who is sponsoring the legislation for work to go ahead, added: “The second phase of Ballpark Village is more than five times the scale of the first phase of Ballpark Village. This bill will enable one of our city's most successful companies to expand their investment in downtown St. Louis and build on the incredibly strong momentum established with the new ballpark and the first phase of Ballpark Village.”
