Briton dies at Qatari World Cup stadium

A British man has died whilst working on the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar – one of the host venues that is undergoing extensive renovation work ahead of the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy confirmed that “a 40-year-old male lost his life” without disclosing further details.

“The relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin has been informed,” the committee added.

“An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is underway and further details will be released in due course.

“The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss.”

Conditions for workers at the eight venues set to stage 2022 World Cup matches have come under scrutiny over recent years. Just weeks after the committee confirmed the death of a Nepalese man at Al Wakrah Stadium on October 22, the Building and Wood Workers’ International, a global trade union for construction workers, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out regular checks at the stadia.
