Atletico Madrid president insists Wanda Metropolitano will be ready, slams worker’s video

Video footage that shows rainwater leaking through the roof of Atletico Madrid’s new stadium has been labelled “stupid” by the Spanish LaLiga football club’s president, Enrique Cerezo.

The finishing touches are currently being applied to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which is due to stage its first Atletico match on September 16, when Malaga visits the capital.

A stadium worker recently posted a video to social media that appeared to show water seeping through the roof of the 67,000-seat stadium.

Madrid has been affected by heavy rainfall over the summer and, as Spanish newspaper Marca notes, the necessary work on the stadium’s roof has not yet been completed, leaving it susceptible to rainwater leaking through.

The stadium’s official Twitter account moved to ease fears among fans, posting: “It rains in Madrid and drops water on the stairs. It’s normal. We are still heat-sealing the roof. Stay calm, it will be perfect on 16/9!”

Cerezo was not impressed after the footage emerged online. He told the El Larguero radio station: “The smart guy who made the video of the stadium, which is still being finished, should be told: ‘If I was in your company I’d sack you, not for doing this but for being a fool.’

“Someone who is working there and finds that funny … at least make a good video, not such an amateur and stupid one.”

Cerezo also insisted that the Malaga game would go ahead as planned.
