Houston has big plans for esports

Houston-based venture capital firm Work America Capital Management has outlined plans for an esports arena in the city.

The company is looking to construct a 120,000sq-ft tech startup complex called ‘The Cannon,’ which will house the esports arena.

The Cannon will be a part of a larger Work America Capital site called the Founders’ District. The move highlights Houston’s expanding interest in the multimillion-dollar esports industry.

A watch party for the esports Overwatch League, which was funded by the venture capital firm, saw more than 700 families and friends pack the warehouse venue in Houston that will be transformed into a $70m esports space.

“Esports provides a strategic investment source for companies looking to attract younger, tech-savvy consumers,” writes the Chronicle’s Ileana Najarro. “At the Founders’ District, esports will serve as a perk for young tech entrepreneurs looking for office space and access to mentorship and venture funding.”

Fans will be able to pay to watch teams play competitive online video games live on stage and on jumbotrons.

Mark Toon, co-founder of Work America Capital, said the rest of the more than 20-acre site will include temporary housing for international tech entrepreneurs, a gym, a football field, retail, restaurants and the arena.

He added that esports provides a strategic investment source for companies looking to attract younger, tech-savvy consumers.
