Oldham stadium returns to its roots

English League One football club Oldham Athletic has returned its home stadium to its traditional Boundary Park moniker after renegotiating a sponsorship deal with retail group Sports Direct.

The original five-year deal with Sports Direct, later extended to six years, is the largest sponsorship deal in Oldham’s history and had seen its home stadium known as SportsDirect.com Park in recent years.

However, Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam, who acquired the club in January, has successfully renegotiated the deal with Sports Direct.

Lemsagam said: “After speaking to Trust Oldham and supporters, it was a priority for me to look at the options surrounding the stadium name and how we could go back to our traditions and heritage.

“I would like to thank Sports Direct for the way they have engaged in discussions as well as the positive and efficient way we have been able to renegotiate the deal. We are also very grateful for the way they have supported the club throughout the last four years.”

The Boundary Park name returned for Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Portsmouth.
