Industry appointments round-up: August 4-10

A round-up of key appointments from within the sports and events industries over the past week.

Michael Owens has been named as the new assistant general manager of Chesapeake Energy Arena (pictured), home of NBA basketball team the Oklahoma City Thunder. Owens will also take on the same role at Oklahoma City’s Cox Convention Center. He will oversee booking, ticketing and marketing efforts for the venues. Owens most recently worked at Rogers Arena, home of NHL ice hockey team the Vancouver Canucks, as director of live entertainment.

Steve Ackles has left AEG to take up a new role with Live Nation. According to Variety, Ackles will work as senior director of touring for Live Nation, overseeing national stadium and arena tours across North America.

Anna Plumley has also joined Live Nation from AEG and will serve as senior director of marketing. Both Ackles and Plumley will be based in Los Angeles and report to Live Nation Entertainment’s senior vice-presidents of North American Touring, Omar Al-Joulani and Ryan McElrath.

Live Nation Productions has hired Matthew Stein as its new head of scripted development and production. Stein will report to Heather Parry, Live Nation Productions’ president of production, film and television.

Live Nation Productions has also appointed Ryan Kroft as its head of unscripted development and production. Kroft will also report to Parry in his new role.

Music Venue Trust has appointed musician Ellie Rowsell, of indie rock band Wolf Alice, and Bengi Usal, senior contemporary music programmer at Southbank Centre, as new board members. Sarah Thirtle has also joined as co-chair to the Trust, a charity created to secure, protect and improve the UK’s grassroots music venues.

The Atlanta Hawks NBA team has announced that it is looking to staff more than 900 new jobs as it prepares for the opening of its transformed Philips Arena. Roles will include part-time supervisory and non-supervisory positions in areas such as guest services, security, housekeeping, food service and more.
