Thornton Tomasetti hails complex Wimbledon Court No.1 project

Tanya de Hoog, a principal and UK director at Thornton Tomasetti, has hailed the impact of the engineering design company’s involvement in a complex project to install a roof over Court No.1 at the Wimbledon Championships in London.

Thornton Tomasetti provided the structural and façade engineering services for the development work at the All England Club in SW19, with the project ensuring that the facility has remained open for the tennis grand slam.

The company designed the new static roof structure, which will support a new retractable roof and will accommodate the roof plant equipment. The firm also designed the trusses of the moving roof, which will stretch for 75 metres across the bowl.

The project is part of a broader development that began in July 2013 and is scheduled to conclude in 2019.

New public facilities, 15 new hospitality suites on a remodelled level, catering facilities, commentary boxes and new seating is also being installed at Court No.1, which will eventually have a capacity of more than 12,000.

“We feel very privileged to be part of this project,” De Hoog said. “The quantity and quality of design that has gone into this building from the whole design team is remarkable.

“From a structural perspective, the integration of new components stitched into an existing building adds another layer of complexity.”
