Liverpool Mayor hopeful of new Everton stadium within two years

English Premier League football club Everton could move to a new stadium within two years, according to Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.

Constructive talks took place yesterday (Tuesday) between Anderson, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and Farhad Moshiri, the club’s majority shareholder.

Following the meeting, Anderson, a lifelong Everton fan, posted a picture of the three men on Twitter with the following message: “Great meeting with Farhad. Still believe a new stadium in 2 yrs is achievable.”

Everton has played at Goodison Park since the club was formed in 1892, and a move to a new ground has been discussed for some time.

In May, plans to build a new venue at the Walton Hall Park site in Liverpool were called off after the project was deemed too ambitious by the club. Anderson had backed the Walton Hall Park development.

Following the setback, Everton said it would turn its attention to two brownfield sites in the city. The Liverpool Echo newspaper reported at the time that one of the sites was located in Liverpool’s North Docks area, with another at Stonebridge Cross in Croxteth. Anderson has admitted to favouring the former option.
