US Bank Stadium awarded X Games event as it prepares for grand opening

A senior official at NFL American football franchise the Minnesota Vikings has praised the “incredible effort” of everyone involved in the development of US Bank Stadium ahead of the venue’s grand opening tomorrow (Friday).

The 73,000-capacity, $1.1bn (€999.4m) stadium has taken around two-and-a-half years to build and officially opens its doors tomorrow, before staging its first sporting event on August 3 when English Premier League soccer club Chelsea takes on Italian Serie A side AC Milan in a pre-season friendly.

“What an incredible journey it has been,” Lester Bagley, the Vikings’ executive vice-president of public affairs and stadium development, said. “We’re very excited about what this brings. You can tell it’s been built with love and by people who care, so it’s been a great partnership.”

The stadium was opened to the press on Tuesday and has been praised for its design, state-of-the-art technologies and links to the Vikings’ past.

In another boost to US Bank Stadium’s profile, it was yesterday awarded hosting rights to the 2017 and 2018 editions of the X Games action sports event. US sports broadcaster ESPN, which organises the event, awarded rights to US Bank Stadium ahead of multiple bidders.

US Bank Stadium has already been handed hosting rights to the 2018 edition of the NFL’s showpiece Super Bowl event.
