Oxford United owner confident of reaching temporary stand solution

The chairman of English third-tier League One football club Oxford United has not given up on plans to fit a temporary fourth stand at its Kassam Stadium home ground.

The venue only has three stands, with a large car park currently viewable behind one of the goals. A temporary stand would require the approval of Oxford City Council, which has backed the move in the past.

Oxford was promoted to League One last year and attendances are expected to increase during the upcoming season. A sell-out crowd has already been predicted for when the club hosts local rival Swindon Town on September 10.

Club chairman Darryl Eales is confident the stand would be fitted by then. “I would anticipate seeing it in place by then, but watch this space,” he told BBC Radio Oxford. “Once we’re good to go, the practicalities of it are straightforward.

“You can actually put it up in two to three days. We’re trying to get planning permission and (stadium owner and former club owner) Firoz Kassam is being helpful in that regard. But the deal is only done when it’s signed, so let’s not get carried away. But I think we’re making good progress.”
