AFC Wimbledon’s new stadium plans given a boost

The Greater London Authority administrative body yesterday (Wednesday) confirmed that it would begin a consultation period regarding English football club AFC Wimbledon’s proposed new ground.

Last year, the local Merton Borough Council granted the third-tier League One outfit permission to build a new 11,000-capacity ground on the Plough Lane site, the former home of the now-defunct Wimbledon.

In March, then Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s office said it would decide whether or not the proposed plans would go ahead. It said a decision would be made later in the year.

Current Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has now said he is keen on reversing Johnson’s decision, and would be willing to hand control back to Merton, which has unanimously backed the move in the past.

Khan has called for any information that challenges Merton’s decision to be presented. If no information is presented then Merton will handle the application.

Plough Lane was the home of Wimbledon until 1991. The club then shared Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park ground until 2003 before it relocated to Milton Keynes and rebranded itself as MK Dons. Wimbledon fans unhappy with the rebrand formed AFC Wimbledon and the club has worked its way up the leagues since it was founded in 2002.
