Darmstadt to rename stadium in memory of supporter

German Bundesliga football club SV Darmstadt 98 is to rename its stadium in memory of a supporter who died earlier this year.

Jonathan Heimes, a life-long Darmstadt fan, helped to raise thousands of euros for charity before he died from cancer in March at the age of 26.

Darmstadt will honour Heimes by renaming its stadium as the Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion for the 2016-17 season.

Aytac Sulu, Darmstadt club captain, said: “We’re playing in Johnny’s living room now, which is a motivation in itself. Every Darmstadt fan who identifies with us identifies with Johnny too.”

Science and technology company Marck, which holds the naming rights to the stadium, said it fully supports the move and will forego the terms of its deal for this season.
