Roma president set for stadium talks with Mayor

James Pallotta, the president of AS Roma, will meet with Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi over the next few days to discuss the Italian Serie A football club’s future home stadium.

Last week it was confirmed that the Lazio Regione would be the next administrative body to assess Stadio della Roma after Roma Capitale completed its own review of the project.

The 52,500-seat stadium will serve as the centrepiece of a wide-ranging development if, as expected, it is given the green light. Pallotta is in Rome this weekend and will speak to Raggi about the development project.

Raggi is a member of the 5-Star Movement and was appointed as Mayor in June. She has previously been forthright in her opposition of Rome’s bid to stage the summer Olympic Games in 2024, claiming that the money spent on fresh construction projects would be better spent on “abandoned municipal installations” and sport in schools.

The 5-Star Movement has criticised the Stadio della Roma development in the past and the talks between Raggi and Pallotta could prove pivotal. Roma is hoping to move into the ground in time for the start of the 2019-20 Serie A season.

Roma currently shares its home stadium, Stadio Olimpico (pictured), with local rival Lazio.
