Barbados plans $150m new national stadium

Barbados

The Barbados government has revealed plans to build a new national stadium at a cost of approximately $150m (£112m/€133m).

The new facility would replace the existing national stadium in Waterford, which opened in 1970 but has fallen into a dilapidated state. The government had been hoping to start work on a new stadium at an earlier date, but a lack of funds has so far delayed the project.

However, Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley told Barbados news outlet Midweek Nation that although funding remains an issue, construction of a new stadium could go ahead under a phased approach.

Lashley added that the government will seek an initial $50m for the first phase of the project, which would include the demolition of existing stands at the Waterford site, as well as the construction of a new grandstand.
