Naples mayor Luigi De Magistris has said that plans are in place to restructure the city’s Stadio San Paolo, the home of Italian Serie A football club Napoli, with €25m (£21.0m/$28.2m) reserved for the project.

Talks had been held over refurbishing the 60,000-capacity stadium earlier this summer, although a solid strategy is still to emerge and construction has not yet started.

However, De Magistris told radio station RTL 102.5 preparations for the project have begun, with the city committed to the refurbishment.

“Relations with [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis are good, sometimes there are difference but we have a good relationship,” De Magistris said. “We are working towards a serious restructuring of the stadium, we have put in some significant resources thanks to Credito Sportivo worth €25m, and procedures for the work have already begun.”

De Magistris added that while the city has put forward money for the project, the club is yet to confirm how much funding it is willing to commit.

“This is all our money, we are still waiting for some resources to be put forward by the company, but we hope this will happen sometime in the near future,” he said.
