AEG-owned venues set to host esports events

Sports and entertainment company Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) has linked up with the Electronic Sports League (ESL) esports organisation in a deal that will take leading gaming events to arenas around the world.

The long-term global partnership is designed to take esports into new markets and will exploit AEG’s large network of venues, comprising more than 120 clubs, theatres, arenas and stadia.

AEG-owned venues such as the Barclays Center in New York and London’s O2 Arena will be used to host qualifying events, tournaments and world championships.

AEG’s production, ticketing, marketing and sponsorship expertise will also be called upon to aid ESL’s growth.

“Esports has reached mainstream status,” Steven Roberts, executive chairman at ESL, said. “Our tournaments are viewed by as many, if not more spectators as traditional sports, so it is a natural progression that industry events increasingly become held at world-class venues. Our partnership with AEG enables us to further improve the spectator experience and create additional, global events for audiences and partners.”
