Minister moves to cool Perth Stadium tenancy issues

Mia Davies, the Sports Minister for Western Australia, has attemped to play down tensions between AFL Aussie rules teams over the tenancy of Perth Stadium.

The 60,000-capacity stadium is due to open in time for the start of the 2018 AFL season, with the Freemantle and West Coast Eagles teams scheduled to play their home games at the ground.

Over the weekend, West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett told the News Limited media company that it was not certain that the team would play at the ground, adding that negotiations between the relevant parties were “a fair way apart”.

Nisbett said it was a distinct possibility that West Coast would continue to play at Domain Stadium, its current home ground, in 2018.

However Davies remains confident that both West Coast and Freemantle will play at Perth Stadium as planned.

“They’re robust negotiations, we’re talking about something that is a significant change and you would expect that,” Davies said, according to Australian broadcaster ABC.

“But I don’t see a future without the Eagles or (Freemantle) Dockers playing at the new stadium and I’m sure their fans are looking forward to it. I’m very confident we will have a positive resolution in the not too distant future.”
