Mexico may leave iconic Estadio Azteca

Mexico’s national football team could be set for a move away from Estadio Azteca, its home for 50 years, according to reports.

Mexican media company Multimedios, citing sources familiar with the matter, said that a move could be in the pipeline due to a series of poor performances at the ground. The Mexican Football Federation is said to be considering alternative options.

Potential new homes include the 49,000-capacity Estadio Chivas and the 50,300-seat Estadio Bancomer.

Estadio Azteca is also the home stadium of Liga MX team Club América. In 1986, it became the first stadium to host two Fifa World Cup finals, having also staged the showpiece fixture in 1970.
