Sunlight causes Cowboys problems during NFL opener

Intense sunlight at AT&T Stadium caused problems for NFL American football team, the Dallas Cowboys, during its season-opening fixture at the weekend.

The game kicked off at 3.25pm local time and as the sun began to set during the fourth quarter, some Cowboys players had their view of the field hampered by the blinding light.

AT&T Stadium’s structure is such that sunlight will stream through its glass panels during games that are played during the late afternoon at this time of the year.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett made light of the situation. “The sun’s been there for five billion years, and it will be there for five billion more,” he said. “We’ve all played in games where sun or weather was a factor. My experience has been that it’s a factor for both teams and everybody who’s out there.”

The stadium has had similar problems with blinding sunlight in the past. AT&T Stadium has a retractable roof, but the glass panels still allow sunlight to seep through.

The Cowboys’ next home game is against the Chicago Bears on September 25 – at 7.30pm.
