Tender issued for land surrounding Cape Town Stadium

Cape

The City of Cape Town in South Africa has issued a R100m (€6.2m/$7m) tender to lease land around the Cape Town Stadium in an effort to commercialise the precinct.

The IOL.co.za website reports that the 7,383sq m plot, which is available on a 25-year lease, is currently being used for overflow parking, although the City said it can be transformed for retail or commercial use.

In addition to the initial tender cost, the City will benefit from income generated by rates and taxes charged on any property that is constructed on the site, with the successful applicants responsible for maintenance and improvement costs of the property. Interested parties have until January 13 to submit their tenders.

“It is envisaged that a medium-rise complex of buildings incorporating parking, ground-floor retail and commercial components will be developed on the site,” the tender said.

“The precinct is located in an area of high recreational and tourist value supported by various natural, structural and aesthetic enabling factors. It is therefore desirous that the Granger Bay Boulevard development integrates seamlessly with the Cape Town Stadium and complements the overall vision and ethos of the precinct in terms of landscaping, hygiene, security and other related operating aspects.”

Cape Town Stadium is the home of South African Premier League football clubs Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City. The 55,000-capacity stadium was also one of the venues used in the South Africa 2010 Fifa World Cup, constructed at a cost of R4.5bn, but now makes losses of over R40m per year.
