D.C. United releases new stadium renderings

North American Major League Soccer club D.C. United has released the updated renderings of its new stadium, which is due to open in 2018.

Tentatively named D.C. United Stadium, the 20,000-cacpacity facility will feature a 65,000sq ft public plaza that will serve as a game day festival area with a host of facilities such as beverage vendors and live music.

The plaza, which will also act as a queuing area for the main gate to the stadium, will also feature a D.C. United sculpture and splash fountain, the details of which are yet to be unveiled. On non-match days, a fountain will surround the sculpture and food vendors will be able to serve pedestrians.

The renderings also feature details of the 1st St. area, which has been realigned as a private two-way road that will be open to the public and also provide a direct connection for cars, cyclists and pedestrians towards the waterfront through the stadium site. The road will be closed on match days when the plaza hosts both pre- and post-game activities.

In addition, the path alongside the east side of 2nd Street, which is adjacent to the stadium, will include parklets where supporters can leave their bicycles.
