Ally of San Diego Mayor backs hotel tax initiative for new Chargers stadium

An ally of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falcouner has backed plans to raise the city’s hotel tax rates to fund the development of a new stadium for NFL American football team the San Diego Chargers.

In July, it was decided that San Diego residents would vote on whether or not hotel tax rates should be raised to fund the project. The ballot will take place in November, with the tax rate option to be marked as ‘Measure C’ on the ballot paper.

Adam Day led the Mayor’s stadium taskforce in 2015 and has thrown his weight behind the plans.

“It’s time for San Diegans to come together to support the San Diego Chargers and Measure C,” Day said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper. “Chargers football is part of the fabric we call the ‘San Diego experience’. In a time when it’s easy to focus on what divides us, our hometown sports teams can unify us around a common San Diego identity.”

Under the solution put forward by the Chargers, a new downtown stadium would be built using funds generated from increasing the city’s tax on hotel stays from 12.5 per cent to 16.5 per cent.

The club would play at a new $1.8bn (€1.6bn) venue in San Diego if the proposal were to be given the go-ahead.
