Coventry apologises after 'political issue' causes stadium closure

English motorcycle speedway team Coventry Storm was forced to apologise to supporters after its meeting on Friday night was cancelled due to a “political issue” involving stadium landlords.

Brandon Stadium had been due to stage the National League outfit’s double-header against Stoke and Rye House. But the club issued a statement confirming that the fixture would not go ahead due to a dispute between it and Coventry Racing Club Ltd.

The statement said that the matter required further discussion with the British Speedway Promoters Association and the new stadium owners.

In July, Coventry Storm and Elite League team Coventry Bees were granted a season-long extension to their lease of Brandon Stadium. The 2016 season had appeared to be the two teams’ last at the ground after it was sold for development.

However, the local Rugby Borough Council intervened to offer the team an initial one-year lease, which will become effective on January 1. The deal includes the option of a further two years, subject to conditions.
