Newcastle Eagles move step closer to own stadium

British Basketball League team the Newcastle Eagles has been granted planning permission to build its own stadium.

The 2,800-capacity arena will be situated near Scotswood Road in Newcastle.

The club had already been given planning permission to build a bigger facility on the same site. However, following a business review it was deemed that a smaller arena would be required and Newcastle City Council has unanimously approved the new plans.

The arena will also serve as a hub for the Eagles’ community initiatives. Eagles managing director Paul Blake told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle newspaper: “This building gives us a home for our community foundation. It’s a significant investment in the West End, and we have been doing that for decades. That won’t change, it will continue.”

The team currently plays at the Sport Central arena at Northumbria University.
