New name for Pittsburgh Penguins’ home arena

New name for Pittsburgh Penguins' home arena

Paint supplier PPG has signed on as the new naming rights partner of the home arena of NHL ice hockey team the Pittsburgh Penguins, after existing partner Consol Energy opted to end its contract.

The facility had been known as Consol Energy Center since opening in 2010 and will henceforth be known as PPG Paints Arena.

Financial terms of the 20-year agreement were not disclosed, although a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper suggested the deal could net the Penguins between $4m (€3.6m) and $9m per year.

Consol had agreed a 21-year deal with the Penguins for naming rights to the venue but the energy company has been forced to terminate the contract amid financial difficulties. According to the Post-Gazette, Consol will continue to serve as a corporate sponsor of the team under a restructured 14-year agreement.

To reflect the arena’s new name, relevant signage will be added to the venue’s interior and exterior in the coming weeks. PPG’s logo will be visible on all fan entrances to the arena, on the roof, and on the ice rink. It will also receive exposure through perimeter advertising boards.

The deal also names PPG, whose services were used during the construction of the arena, as the official paint supplier of the team.
