NSW strikes stadium naming-rights deal

Venues New South Wales has struck a deal for property developer McDonald Jones Homes to become the new naming-rights partner of Hunter Stadium, the home of two of Newcastle’s top sports teams in Australia.

Hunter Stadium, which has a capacity of 33,000, hosts Newcastle Knights NRL rugby league matches and the home games of the Newcastle Jets A-League football team.

The sponsorship deal will run for five years, through to 2021. The facility will be renamed as McDonald Jones Stadium.

New South Wales’ Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, did not reveal the value of the deal, but said that funds raised by the deal would be reinvested into stadium operations.

“Hunter Stadium has played host to international and domestic football greats from all codes, from David Beckham and LA Galaxy in 2010 to the Qantas Wallabies and AFC Asian Cup teams last year and now the stadium is linked to one of the region’s most successful local builders,” Ayres said.

“The NSW Government has invested more than Aus$100m redeveloping the Western and Eastern Grandstand and installing a new playing surface and now this naming rights deal will ensure McDonald Jones Stadium continues its hosting capabilities for many years to come.”
