Tottenham wants station name change ahead of stadium move

Tottenham Hotspur is in talks with Transport for London (TfL) in order to change the name of White Hart Lane station to ‘Tottenham Hotspur’ ahead of the English Premier League football club’s move to a new stadium.

According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham is confident of paying less than the £12m (€13.3m/$14.6m) being demanded by TfL.

Tottenham will move out its current White Hart Lane ground at the end of this season and will start playing at the new adjacent 61,000-seat facility at the start of the 2018-19 campaign. Next season, the club will play its home matches at 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium.

It has been reported that Tottenham is also exploring the idea of changing the name of a section of road between White Hart Lane station and the junction of Tottenham High Road.

Rival Arsenal, which moved from Highbury to Emirates Stadium in 2006, changed the name of Gillespie Road underground station in 1932 to ‘Arsenal’.

TfL has lodged a planning application with Haringey Council to carry out a major redevelopment of White Hart Lane station ahead of the stadium move.
