Cleveland Indians' run to World Series leads to drop in Cavaliers ticket prices

The success of the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball franchise has led to falling prices for tickets to watch the city’s NBA basketball team, the Cavaliers, in the opening game of the season.

Yesterday (Wednesday), the Indians qualified for a first World Series in 19 years after recording a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Indians will play the first game of the World Series against a to-be-determined team at home on October 25 .

That same night, the Cavaliers, the defending NBA champion, begin the new season with a home game against the New York Knicks. The game will see the Cavaliers presented with the NBA Championship rings to mark last season’s achievements.

The exploits of the Indians, however, have resulted in the Cavaliers taking a backseat among some locals who are fans of both teams, with secondary ticket prices for the NBA opener at Quicken Loans Arena having fallen in recent weeks.

The ESPN website reports that centre court lower-level tickets that were selling for $5,000 (£4,084/€4,565) in August can now be picked up for $1,500 or less. Lower-level corner seats have also dropped from $700 to $350.

“People who have season tickets for the Cavaliers and the Indians are going to sell their Cavs tickets for this night, if they haven't already,” Mark Klang, owner of Cleveland-based ticket brokerage Amazing Tickets, told ESPN. “That means there are going to be more tickets than we anticipated on the open market for the Cavs game, so supply will go up.”
