Excavation work to commence on Rams’ new Inglewood stadium

Preliminary stages of excavation work for the LA Rams NFL American football team’s new stadium in Inglewood, California, could begin in the next few weeks, according to the LA Times newspaper.

The Rams relocated back to California from St Louis in time for the current 2016 season, with the team currently playing at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, its home before moving to Anaheim in 1979.

The team is due to move into the yet-to-be named Inglewood stadium ahead of the 2019 season. The new facility, which has been given the temporary name of the City of Champions Stadium, will have a capacity of 80,000 seats.

Gerard McCallum II, project manager for the Hollywood Park Land Co, which is working on the 298-acre site, said that construction work on the stadium could begin “in the next month”.

Workers were given a further boost this week with the news that the Federal Aviation Administration approved the first of several pieces of heavy machinery that will be used during construction. The body ruled that the 110-foot tall LB 44 rotary drill would not pose a hazard to air navigation in the area.

The FAA is yet to rule on six other applications for large cranes at the site.
