Luton Town hopeful of stadium decision by early 2017

English fourth-tier League Two football club Luton Town is hoping that a decision on its potential new stadium will be made by early next year.

Luton has proposed that a new 17,500-capacity should be built on the Power Court and Newlands Park site in the centre of the town. The wide-ranging development plan, which has been submitted to the local council, also includes a music and entertainment venue, as well as bars, restaurants, apartments and hotels.

Luton’s current Kenilworth Road home ground (pictured) has a capacity of about 10,000. The club has played at the stadium since it opened in 1905.

A decision on the new development is expected in the coming months.

Development director Michael Moran told the Luton News/Gazette newspaper: “It’s ultimately with the council for assessment and determination, so we remain in contact with the council, responding to queries, providing further information as required.

“But it’s now in the hands of the council over the coming weeks and months to come back and make a decision. There’s a statutory deadline of 16 weeks, but because of the size of the application, (it's) likely that it will be extended.

“By putting everything as submitted as in-depth as we can, we’ve tried to help the council as much as possible by pre-empting as many issues and trying to give as much supporting evidence as possible. So it’s with the council, hopefully we’ll get determination, if not by the end of the year, then very early next.”
