Both sides of Texas Rangers stadium debate make final pitches

Supporters and opponents of a proposed new ballpark for the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball team made their final pitches yesterday (Monday) as the city of Arlington prepares to vote on the development.

On November 9, Arlington residents will vote for or against a proposal that would fund the development of a new $1bn (£824m/€920m) stadium next to Globe Life Park, the Rangers’ current home.

In May, the Rangers announced plans to build the stadium, which will feature a retractable roof. Arlington City Council approved calls for the proposition to be put to a public vote.

Should residents vote in favour of the development, the city would contribute $500m towards the construction of the facility, with the money to be generated by raises in half-cent sales tax, room tax and car-rental tax.

The Rangers will remain at Globe Life Park if the proposal is not approved.

A recent survey carried out by the WFAA television channel and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper found that 42 per cent of voters supported the proposal, with 42 per cent against it. Sixteen per cent said they were unsure how they would vote.

Yesterday, Rangers manager Jeff Banister and bench coach Steve Buechele were among those lined up to support the proposal to fund the development. A Save Our Stadium campaign, which is striving for the Rangers to remain at Globe Life Park, the team’s home since 1994, has also been set up.
