Crowd trouble leads to closure of Argentinian football ground

Argentinian Primera División football team Atlético Tucumán has had its stadium closed by the local government following crowd issues during its game against Boca Juniors on Sunday.

Eduardo Valdez, deputy director of civil defence in the Tucumán province, said that the attendance for the game at Estadio Monumental was some 8,000 over the 22,500 capacity.

Smoke bombs and flares, which are prohibited in stadia, were also used during the disturbances.

“We put an account system in place to know exactly how many people entered the stadium,” Valdez said, according to the ESPN website. “When we reached the capacity, we told the director to close the doors of the stadium, but that did not happen and people kept coming.”

Local authorities will now analyse the case before deciding on the appropriate sanction, with a financial punishment expected to be issued. ESPN’s report added that the stadium is likely to be open in time for Atlético’s next home game on November 6.
