Raiders' move to Vegas not a done deal, Adelson warns

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, one of the key figures in the proposed relocation of the Oakland Raiders NFL American football team to Las Vegas, has warned that there is no guarantee that the move will go ahead.

Last week, Brian Sandoval, Governor of the state of Nevada, formally approved plans to raise $750m (£615m/€685.5m) in hotel tax money to help fund the new 65,000-capacity stadium for the Raiders.

Raiders owner Mark Davis is set to pledge $500m towards the project, with the remaining $650m of the $1.9bn development to be provided by the family of Adelson, who owns the Las Vegas Sands Corp. casino operating company.

Last week’s approval looked to have effectively paved the way for a new stadium to be built but talks between Adelson and the Raiders now appear to have stalled.

“They want so much,” Adelson told the Reuters news agency. “So I told my people, ‘tell them I could live with the deal, I could live without the deal. Here’s the way it’s gonna go down. If they don’t want it, bye-bye'.”

The Raiders’ move to Las Vegas still requires the approval of 24 of the NFL’s 32 team owners.
