Underprivileged groups set to work on Vegas NFL stadium

A deal is set to be agreed for the majority of construction and operational jobs on the proposed development of an NFL American football stadium in Las Vegas to be awarded to underprivileged workers.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper reports that democratic legislative leaders in the US city plan to reach a community benefits agreement with a to-be-determined stadium authority board to introduce the measure.

According to Senate minority leader Aaron Ford, the agreement is being worked out with representatives of the family of Sheldon Adelson, owner of casino company Las Vegas Sands Corp., which will part-finance the $1.9bn (£1.6bn/€1.7bn) development.

The 65,000-capacity stadium would serve as the home of the Oakland Raiders.

The state of Nevada last week approved plans to raise $750m in hotel tax money to help fund the facility.

Earlier this week, Adelson warned that there is still a chance he could walk away from the deal if negotiations with the Raiders continue to stall. Raiders owner Mark Davis, who himself is set to pledge $500m to the development, has since labelled the suggestion a “non-story”.
