Utah Jazz set to shine under rooftop solar panels

Full-service residential solar provider Vivint Solar has announced it is to install more than 2,700 rooftop solar panels at Vivint Smart Home Arena, the home of NBA basketball franchise, the Utah Jazz.

The installation marks one of the largest rooftop solar energy systems among indoor sports venues in the US, with the panels to cover more than 80,000 square feet and generate almost 700 kilowatts of energy.

The panels form part of a wider $125m (£103m/€115m) project at the arena, which the Jazz said will start at the end of the 2016-17 season. Under the plans, all six levels of the near 20,000-capacity arena will be upgraded in a bid to improve the guest experience for supporters.

“The overall building transformation will incorporate environmental and energy improvements, enhance the experience for our guests, and return the arena to a first-class venue,” Vivint Smart Home Arena president Jim Olson said.

David Bywater, chief executive of Vivint Solar, added: “It's not only contributing to the arena's technological renovations, but it's a clean energy decision that is going to make a huge environmental impact on a community deeply affected by the inversion.”
