Iconic ice hockey stadium to receive sustainable revamp

NCC, a sustainable building company, has been handed responsibility for constructing the new Jordal Amfi sports arena in Oslo, Norway.

The new stadium will replace the original Jordal Amfi venue, which opened in late 1951 ahead of the winter Olympic Games in the city the following year, making it one of the oldest active ice hockey venues in the world.

The new facility will host ice hockey, as well as other sports and public events. Restaurants, cafes and conference facilities will also be located on site.

According to NCC – which has been behind other Oslo developments such as the Bislett Stadion, Olso Spektrum and Telenor Arena – the construction work behind the new stadium will be carbon-neutral.

A renovation of the venue was originally earmarked as part of Oslo’s proposal to host the 2022 winter Olympics, but the bid collapsed. However, the local council approved the revamp in June of this year and construction work is expected to start in January.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded the contract to construct a new sports arena in the city of Oslo, and we are looking forward to starting the project,” Marianne Brudevold Eek, the head of NCC’s civil engineering department, told the Climate Action Programme.

“At NCC, we have made substantial progress in the ‘green shift’ and can offer private and public developers a number of sustainable solutions and certifications.”
