Pistons in talks to move to Red Wings arena

The Detroit Pistons North American NBA basketball franchise is in advanced talks over a possible move to play at the new home of the Detroit Red Wings NHL ice hockey team, according to the Associated Press news agency.

The Pistons could leave The Palace of Auburn Hills to make the move downtown ahead of the start of next season, the report said, although no formal deal has been agreed.

Representatives from the Pistons and Olympia Entertainment, which handles business operations for the Red Wings, have been in negotiations.

The NHL team is playing its final season at Joe Louis Arena before moving to the new Little Caesars Arena for the 2017-18 campaign. Construction work on the $627m (£516m/€573m) project began in April last year. The 21,000-seat venue will be situated across the highway from Ford Field, the home of the Detroit Lions NFL American football franchise.

The Palace has been home to the Pistons since 1988, but current owner Tom Gores bought the franchise from Karen Davidson in 2011.
