Renovations approved for Atlanta Hawks’ Philips Arena

The Atlanta Hawks North American NBA basketball franchise will remain at its current Philips Arena home after Atlanta City approved plans to renovate the downtown facility.

According to the Omnisport.com website, Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed announced yesterday (Tuesday) that the City will contribute $142.5m (€128.6m/£116.2m) to the project, which will cost almost $193m in total.

Atlanta’s financial commitment to the renovations will come mainly from rental-car tax revenue, while the $12.5m sale of Turner Field, the former home of Major League Baseball team the Atlanta Braves, will also help fund work. Georgia State University recently purchased the facility for its American football team.

Work will take place alongside the ongoing construction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the future home of NFL American football franchise the Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer team Atlanta United.
