D-day nears for Monterrey stadium decision

A decision will be taken on whether to construct a new stadium for the Tigres UANL, a top-tier Mexican football club, by the end of this year.

The club’s president, Rogelio Garza, said that the club would decide on whether to revamp the Liga MX outfit’s existing stadium in Monterrey, or whether to build a new venue, in the coming weeks.

Garza told reporters that a renovation of the existing facility remains the most viable option.

“I think it is definitely the first choice,” Garza said. “We are working on it and I hope that before the end of the year we will have an answer.”

The club’s current home, the 41,000-capacity Estadio Universitario – nicknamed El Volcán – opened in 1967.
