Perth Stadium unlikely to open with Ashes Test, report says

It is increasingly unlikely that the new Perth Stadium will be able to open with an Australia v England Ashes cricket Test match during the 2017-18 series, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The newspaper said that Cricket Australia remains hopeful that the new 60,000-seat stadium will be able to host one of the matches during England’s tour, which will run from November to January.

However, the report added that there is still a lot of construction work to be carried out and the nearby train station development is unlikely to have opened in time.

Previous reports have indicated that the stadium is more likely to be ready by March 2018.

There has also been criticism of the project from some quarters, including former Australia cricket player Dennis Lillee, a former president of the Western Australia Cricket Association.

“I believe the originally-stated billion-dollar cost for the new Perth Stadium will at least double by the time it is complete,” Lillee said.
