Ghana Sports Minister contradicts President over stadium plans

Ghana’s Volta region could be set to miss out on a new sports stadium after the country’s Sports Minister claimed that an existing facility will undergo renovation instead.

President John Dramani Mahama has repeatedly stated the government’s desire to build a new stadium in the region to replace the run-down Ho Sports Stadium, which opened in 1957.

However, Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has contradicted the President by insisting Ho Sports Stadium will be expanded as part of a redevelopment plan that would increase its capacity to about 16,000.

Vanderpuye said that the government had now decided to revamp the existing facility and pointed to possible transportation issues as a reason for not pursuing a new stadium.

“We don’t want the situation where the stadium will be too far from town thereby bringing transportation problems as we are witnessing with the Essipong stadium (in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi),” Vanderpuye told the GBC Volta Star radio station.

Engineers have reportedly been assigned to carry out feasibility studies at Ho Sports Stadium to discern how much work needs to be done.
