Matmut unveiled as Lyon French rugby club’s stadium partner

French insurance company Matmut has struck a deal with Lyon Olympique to become the new naming-rights sponsor of the Top 14 rugby union club’s stadium.

Stade de Gerland also served as the home of Olympique Lyonnais before the Ligue 1 football club’s move to the new 60,000-capacity Stade des Lumieres in January of this year.

The 40,000-seat Stade de Gerland will be renamed the Matmut Stadium from January 2017.

The agreement will run for 10 years, through to the end of 2026, and is worth €2m (£1.8m/$2.2m) per year.

The stadium is set to undergo renovation work, with the club’s major shareholder, GL Events, having secured a long-term lease with the local council.

“I am delighted that a large insurer like Matmut, already a sponsor of the club, will invest in a new and significant way with us to coincide with the arrival of Lyon into the elite of French rugby,” said Olivier Ginon, president of GL events.

Lyon was promoted to the top-tier Top 14 ahead of the 2016-17 season.
