Fifa won’t decide on Qatar World Cup stadia before New Year

Fifa, football’s global governing body, will not decide on how many stadia should be used in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup before the end of this year, as previously expected.

The AFP news agency said that Fifa would decide on the number “in due course” as part of an “overall ongoing infrastructure discussion.”

The report said that a number of issues still need to be considered, including transportation to venues for a shortened 28-day tournament.

Qatar will have between eight and 12 stadia for the competition. Eight have been confirmed so far, with five of those under construction – Al Rayyan, Khalifa International, Al Wakrah, Al Bayt Al Khor and Qatar Foundation. Three other venues in Lusail, Ras Abu Aboud and Al Thumama are in earlier stages of development.

All eight of the venues are expected to be completed by 2020, with Qatar set to spend up to $10bn (£8bn/€9bn) on stadium construction, with a further $200bn to be spent on wider infrastructure upgrades.
