Safe-standing areas to be discussed by Premier League clubs

The thorny issue of safe-standing areas at Premier League games will be discussed by the English top tier's clubs at a meeting next week.

It will be the first time the matter has been discussed following informal talks at some clubs and no firm decision is set to be made.

Regulations on all-seat stadia were introduced in England following Lord Justice Taylor's report into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

Preliminary talks have taken place betwen supporters groups at Chelsea and Liverpool, and Manchester United executives recently visited Celtic Park to check out the Scottish Premier League champion's safe-standing area.

"Clearly there's a legal position at the moment, and we are required by law to have all-seater stadiums," Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore told Sky Sports News HQ.

"There's no prospect with the government of that changing at the moment. We're not immune to the fact that this is a topic and therefore it is in discussion with our clubs.

"They are all looking at the issue and at some point it will come around our table and we will see if there's a point at which we might open up discussions with government to see what their view is on it.

"It's very much individual clubs sensing for themselves where they are with it and we may or may not facilitate that discussion in the weeks and months to come."
