Tebas drops hint on Atletico stadium name

Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, which governs the top two divisions of Spanish football, may have accidentally revealed the name of Atletico Madrid’s new stadium during a press event.

Atletico’s new stadium is a former athletics facility that is undergoing a significant revamp. The stadium has been given a provisional name of La Peineta and is due to be completed in time for the 2017-18 LaLiga season.

A naming rights partner for the facility has yet to be revealed, although Tebas appears to have dropped a hint on the stadium’s eventual moniker.

“Atleti are going to bring us to see the Estadio de Madrid, or the Wanda, as it may be better said,” Tebas said, according to the AS newspaper.

‘Wanda’ refers to Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda, which owns a 20-per-cent stake in Atletico. The company’s chairman, Wang Jianlin, is said to be keen on adding its name to the club’s new stadium.

It was not clear whether Tebas was being serious or making a joke. Atletico has not commented on the speculation.
