Cost of Tokyo 2020 gymnastics venue skyrockets

The cost of constructing a gymnastics venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games is set to cost more than double the amount originally projected.

Shimzu Corp has been awarded a contract worth Y20.5bn (£153m/€175m/$188m) to construct the venue. According to Japanese news agency Kyodo, organisers only set aside Y8.9bn for the venue when submitting a bid to stage the Games in 2013.

Shimzu’s bid does however include the cost of design, something that was not included in the organising committee’s submission to the International Olympic Committee three years ago.

Construction-related prices and a need to develop the venue’s earthquake resistance contributed to the cost increase, organisers said.

Work on the 12,000-capacity venue is due to begin next winter. It is hoped the facility will be ready by October 2019.
