Local economy boosted by Perth Stadium development

Perth’s economy is being boosted by the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art stadium in the Australian city, with more than A$450m (£269m/€313m/$331m) worth of subcontracts going to local companies.

Mia Davies, Sport and Recreation Minister for Western Australia, said that about 80 per cent of stadium subcontracts have been handed to local firms.

The total number of local workers expected to be involved in the stadium over its three-year construction phase is around 5,800, with 100 apprentices or trainees currently on site.

“Hundreds of jobs have been created as a result of this investment by the Liberal National Government in this major infrastructure project,” Davies said. “There are about 800 construction workers now on site, and this workforce is expected to peak at 1,200 in the next few months.”

Since construction commenced in 2014, just two subcontracts have been awarded to overseas businesses, at a cost of A$8.6m. Seventy-seven contracts worth A$456m have been awarded to Western Australian companies, with a further 20 going to Australian businesses at a cost of A$78.9m.

The 60,000-capacity stadium is due to open in March 2018. It will primarily host Aussie rules football games, but will also stage cricket and rugby matches, as well as other events.
