Los Angeles Rams breaks ground on new stadium

The Los Angeles Rams NFL American football franchise has broken ground on its new stadium, which is slated to open in 2019.

The 70,000-seater stadium will be located on the site of the former Hollywood Park Racetrack in the Inglewood area of the Californian city. The facility has already been selected to host the NFL showpiece Super Bowl end-of-season event in 2021.

While the stadium will serve as the centrepiece of the development, the project will also include two million square feet of Class A commercial space, as well as 2,500 modern residences, a 6,000-seater performing arts venue and 25 acres of public land.

Stan Kroenke, owner of the franchise that relocated from St Louis earlier this year, said: “This is a great day. I read it this morning, and I hadn’t really thought about it, but this is the first time a stadium will have been built for an NFL team in Los Angeles. Isn’t that remarkable?”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also spoke positively about the new stadium, telling the Rams’ official website: “I think the site is a fantastic site. There’s a vision of how we’re going to put that together in this community to be more than a football stadium. It’s going to be someplace where people can come for entertainment, to work, to live. And this is something that we’re very proud of — we want to see that.

“But I think that we also got it right with the Rams. The return of the Rams to Los Angeles is something that I think is a great thing for the NFL overall.”
