Roma's stadium plans suffer setback

Italian Serie A football club AS Roma’s new stadium plans appear to have hit another stumbling block after it was claimed that a landscape survey was not carried out before proposals for the facility were submitted.

Margherita Echberg, the superintendent of archaeology, fine arts and landscape in Rome, criticised the plans during a regional government meeting yesterday (Thursday), according to Rome-based newspaper Il Tempo

Echberg has claimed that the development would “interfere with monuments and the landscape”. Echberg also placed greater importance on the presence of “buildings of considerable height over that of infrastructure works”.

Roma will likely have to resubmit the plans to include a landscape survey. It had been hoped that the club would break ground on the development next spring and it is unclear whether the latest development will delay the project.

The Stadio della Roma development has been in the pipeline for a number of years but has stalled due to various problems with municipal and regional governments.

Earlier this week, a study by Sapienza University revealed that the wide-ranging Stadio della Roma-Tor di Valle project would be worth almost €20bn (£17.4bn/$21.2bn) to the city over the next decade.

Roma currently plays at the city’s Stadio Olimpico, a venue it shares with arch rival Lazio.
