Government calls out Adelaide Oval over drinks prices

The body that operates the Adelaide Oval cricket stadium in Australia has had the prices of its match-day refreshments questioned by the local government.

The venue is due to stage the third and final Test match between Australia and South Africa on Thursday and the Stadium Management Authority has introduced a number of cost hikes ahead of the encounter.

Australian news outlet ABC reports that a 600ml soft drink will cost A$5.40 (£3.18/€3.74/$3.98), while a beer will cost A$9.20. Pies and pasties are priced at A$5.60, with a portion of chips to cost A$5.50. Bottles of water will remain A$5.

“I think it’s a bit rich and we’ve issued a ‘please explain’ to the Stadium Management Authority,” South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill said, according to ABC. “It seems a bit steep for us – A$5 for a bottle of water. Families are there. They need to be able to get a drink.

“We do expect to hear an explanation for what seem to be rather large increases, and also increases at variance with places like the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). We spent a lot of money building this oval, we spend a lot of money attracting acts to it.

"We also want to make sure that the people that come to the games and the events get to enjoy it without being fleeced.”

In a statement reported by ABC, SMA chief executive Andrew Daniels said: “We have had some fruitful discussions with Government today around our shared desire to keep events as affordable as possible for patrons and we look forward to discussing the issue with (Infrastructure) Minister (Stephen) Mullighan at the earliest opportunity.”
